Reflections from the Women in Economic Development Forum
Key Takeaways from Area Development's Event in Chicago
Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Women in Economic Development Forum in Chicago. organized by Area Development. It was truly empowering to be surrounded by more than 200 accomplished women united by a shared passion for strengthening local, national, and global economies through innovative economic development.
This was my first time – though hopefully not the last – walking into a conference room filled entirely with women. The energy was inspiring and emphasized that there are so many intelligent, driven professionals to enhance quality of life, attract business, and strengthen the ecosystems that power our economies.
Over the two-day event, three key takeaways stood out to me:
Collaboration must come before competition.
EDOs often operate in a competitive mindset – vying for business attraction and investment. But true success happens when communities collaborate. By sharing best practices and supporting regional growth, we create an environment where businesses not only locate – but stay, expand, and innovate.
Local communities are the clients.
It’s easy to focus on attracting new businesses and creating jobs, but growth only works when it fits the community’s character and needs. Listening to residents and existing businesses to understand the types of businesses that will strengthen the local ecosystem is essential to sustainable development.
No community is too small for foreign investment.
Many communities underestimate their potential to attract FDI. Whether the investor is from the next state or across the globe, the fundamentals are the same: preparation, insightful value propositions, and a welcoming experience. With proper due diligence and thoughtful engagement, any community can demonstrate the synergies that make it an ideal investment destination.
I feel inspired by the collective drive of women who are shaping the future of economic development. I look forward to working together, through collaboration, purpose, and community-centered growth.
